Grond , the Hammer of the Underworld was a battle hammer or Flail belonging to Morgoth. When the weapon hit the ground, it opened gaps in it. Forged in an unknown time and place, Grond was mentioned only once, as the weapon of Morgoth in his single combat with Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor. Fingolfin had challenged Morgoth after the Ñoldor's devastating defeat at the Dagor Bragollach.
