The Grey Helm was an iron helm of +5 enemy damage worn by Athaliah during the Battle for the Moon and other battles. It held runes reading “Helm of Athaliah, Chosen of Melkor the Lord of the Valar. Woe and curses betide any whoso toucheth this’.
History[]
The First Age[]
The helm was forged by Makar for Measse but an orc in the service of Melkor stole it and carried it to Thangorodrim. There Melkor set it upon Athaliah’s head. Lungorthin set the runes within it using the power of Mannish blood sacrifice.
Athaliah wore the helmet many times:during her service at Lammoth, during the Dagor Bragollach (when it set the heart of Maglor to fear), and during the Battle for the Moon,at the War of Wrath. Eonwë dueled her for the helm atop a lunar peak and using his sword he ended her foul life. He then caused a crater (which men would later name Clavius) to be blasted in the lunar surface and set the helm there in a cavern.
Rediscovery[]
In 1975,the American Apollo 24 space mission landed in Clavius. Astronauts Pete Conrad and Joe Allen found the helm in a cave. This sparked a conspiracy theory that there had once been a great lunar civilization that taught the Egyptians and other ancient civilizations the secrets of engineering.
Conrad returned the helm to Earth and after his death in 1992 the helm passed into the care of his son Chris,. In 1999,Chris,who was hard put to it for money, sold the helm on eBay.
