The Great Northern Wars was a centuries-long struggle between the northern Dúnadan kingdoms and the forces of Angmar, led by the Witch-king. The war consisted of the forming of Angmar's kingdom and the fall of Arthedain. It began with the wars in Cardolan and ended with the combined forces of Lindon, Imladris, and Gondor to finally defeat and drive the Witch-king from the land. In the end it was Glorfindel that stood up to him and came up with the prophecy that "not by the hand of man shall he fall."

- Second Northern War (1408-1410): King Ostoher of Cardolan and his sons fall in the Battle on Tyrn Gorthad, after which Amon Sûl is besieged and falls, though its Palantír is saved.
- Third Northern War (1973-1975): The Witch-king destroys Arthedain, but Angmar falls to the vengeful wrath of Gondor and the Elves.
