In secondary works inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien´s Lord of the Rings, the Name Gothmog has been given to a number of different personages.In Tolkien´s orignal works Gothmog was the name of the Lord of Balrogs, and later in the third age the name of the lieutenant of Morgûl.It is unknown if the latter was supposed to be a mortal man, a Nazgûl or another sort of creature.Peter Jackson´s movie Trilogy makes Gothmog a huge deformed Orc while MERP considered Gothmog a Half-Troll, in the original War of the Ring (SPI) board game, Gothmog was identified as one of the Nazgûl.While it could be argued that the movie trilogy´s Gothmog and MERP´s Gothmog are the same character (possibly a Troll-Orc-Crossbreed) there´s also the possible interpretation that Gothmog was a mere title held by different personages at different times and that the Gothmog of 1650 T.A. was a half-troll while the Gothmog of 3019 T.A. was an Orc, and that one of the Nazgûl also had occupied the position for a period of time.In LOTRO Gothmog actually is King Eärnur of Gondor who, wounded by a Morgûl-Blade became a Wraith under the ban of the Lord of the Nazgûl.
