Gunun was a rank in the military of Mordor. It was a position similar to or somewhere in between of a General and a Lieutenant-General. A Gunun was in command of a host consisting of 80,000-126,000 Warriors.
In the Military of Dol Guldur the Gunun-u-Kazgûmhoth was equivanent to a High Captain or Supreme Commander in charge of three Urhoth of 12,000-30,000 Soldiers , more similar to a Murnairtur of Angmar than a Gunun of Gorgoroth.
