A lesser descendant of Durin's line, Glóin was a companion of Thorin Oakenshield in his successful attempt to reclaim Erebor from the settled Smaug in T.A. 2941. Surviving the ensuing Battle of Five Armies, Glóin became wealthy and influential among his Folk due to his experience, and settled with his wife to raise Gimli Elf-friend, and in T.A. 3018, he travelled with that son to Rivendell, where he counseled with Elrond. He commanded in the Battle of Dale and survived, though injured, and he lived on into the early Fourth Age.
Character[]
A distant kinsman of Thórin, Glóin was a clever business-dwarf who dwelt during childhood in Dunland with his family (he even used to speak with a mild Dunlendish accent). He was accustomed to hardships and war from youth, having taken part at the Battle of Azanulbizar at only twenty. He was rather an arrogant stickler who often quarreled with his brother Óin, but also a devoted patriarch and loving father to his son Gimli. From his experiences, Glóin was an experienced traveller, survivalist and smith, though his hidden talent was for fire-starting. He was often a ranter and could be gruff even to friends, let alone strangers. His name meant Glowing One.
