A Northman Lord and the ancestor of Bard Bowman, Girion (del.:"Geiriarn") was the last Lord of Dale in the first Line. Smaug the Dragon slew him as he attempted to defend Dale in T.A. 2,770. Married to Mikla, he was the father of Girnir.

According to LOTRO Girion of Dale was the third Lord of his house to bear the Name "Geirjarn" or "Ironbolt", named after Morhlin, the Black Arrow of Dragonslaying, given to his ancestors by the Dwarves of Erebor. Another fanfic piece however explains Girion's name as "Son of Gir", "Gir" being a norse word for "Vulture".
