Galthoniel was a Dúnadan woman of Arnor and a descendant of Amarthiel. When word was reached by Gandalf the Grey of Sauron's return, Galthoniel was old enough to join the Rangers of the North and was ready to fight against those that were pledging their allegiance to the Dark Lord. She was stationed at the western shore of Brandywine River in Evendim when she heard the news that the Nazgûl were riding here. From her camp on a small rise overlooking the Barandalf, she kept watch so that the Enemy would not reach the Shire and chose to stay behind rather than joining the Grey Company.
