The uncle of the fief's heir Echorion, Gaerdil (S."Sea-friend") ruled Girithlin as regent.Gaerdil was one of the few lesser Dúnedain who approached the height of their Númenórean ancestors, standing 7’3” tall. He had the martial skills that might be expected of a man of his size, and he was bold and forward in battle. He was an unmistakable figure on public occasions, noted for his brooding crimson robes, and his refusal to hide his balding pate beneath a convenient helm. For all of his manifest virtues, Gaerdil was at least the most conniving, if not the most ruthless of the Princes of Cardolan. He had has never been directly implicated in any treachery, but he had lived too long not to have had the rumor mill catch up with him. He was no longer trusted by anyone except, perhaps, his nephew. Although Gaerdil was once content to rule from the shadows, he had grown to like the trappings of power during the regency.

Original form in MERP:Eärnil = Gaerdil
It seems unlikely that a lesser Dúnadan Lord, after the fall of the last King of Cardolan would have taken a Quenya name.Therefore his name was replaced by a Sindarin cognate, to match the naming conventions of the other Dúnadan rulers of his time.
