Frár traveled with Balin to take back the halls of Khazad-dum from defiling Orcs and Trolls. Like many of his compatriots, Frár was slain in battle at Durin's Bridge in T.A, 2994, just five years after the colony had proclaimed Balin "Lord of Moria The incident is recorded in the famed Book of Mazarbul.

In earlier drafts for The Lord of the Rings Frár briefly replaced Burin son of Balin as the dwarf who had accompanied Gloin to the Council of Elrond, the character who would eventually evolve into Gimli son of Glóin.
