Neldoreth2

The Forest of Neldoreth, also known as Taur-na-Neldor (S."Beech-Forest"), was the northern and lesser part of the Kingdom of Doriath, lying between the rivers Esgalduin and Mindeb. This vast and ancient beech forest was a place of profound beauty and significance, forming part of the enchanted realm protected by the Girdle of Melian. Lúthien Tinúviel, the most beautiful of the Children of Ilúvatar, was born under its golden boughs, and it was here that Beren Erchamion first saw her dancing in moonlight, an encounter that marked the beginning of their legendary tale.

Within Neldoreth stood the mighty Hírilorn, the great tree where Thingol imprisoned Lúthien in a house high among its branches to prevent her from seeking Beren. Treebeard, the eldest known of the Ents, later reminisced about wandering in Neldoreth during the First Age, marveling at its autumnal splendor of gold and red leaves. Some traditions suggest that Treebeard himself originated in Neldoreth, long before the Ages of the world as known to Men.
