Feren was a Silvan elf of the Woodland Realm and a Captain of King Thranduil's guard. Usually a studious and attentive soldier, he had a tendency to slacken his tasks if he found the chance. This he did in T.A. ca. 2941, when, after completing his tasks with his friend and colleague Galion, the King's Butler, they both misappropriated the King's finest Wine and consorted over it, becoming quite intoxicated, by Elvish standards; and when their merrymaking had given way to slumber, the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins used the opportunity to free the imprisoned Dwarves of Thórin's Company.
Thrandúil was less than pleased upon recieving report of these events; and gentle though he was in Elvish fashion, he restricted his Feren's access to his cellars henceforth, and assigned him to tasks abroad, and in the upper halls of Caras-e-Dwarwaith, where he had less access to his mischievous friend.
