Harsh and grim, the Farmer Goodman Maggot I, simply known as Old Maggot or Farmer Maggot, was a true descendant of the Stoors. He was a rugged farmer who inhabited the manor Bamfurlong in the marish, the easternmost part of the Shire on the border to Buckland. He was not a kind fellow to strangers, and while he had children of his own and cared for them well, he was not gentle to the tresspassing youth, as were most Hobbits, and he even cruelly and brutally abused Frodo Baggins in his youth by beating. Nonetheless, such behavior was common to Stoors, which were harsher as a rule than mosg of their kind. He was a well-informed fellow, and even exchanged conversation with the generally-neutral Tom Bombadil from time to time.
