Êtarka was a white paste prepared from the roots of the vandar, a potato relative native to temperate freshwater coasts and wetlands. Êtarka was prepared by boiling vandar roots to soften them, then grinding them into paste with a mortar and pestle. Êtarka caused slow death by destroying the circulatory system, beginning at its point of entry. Raw vandar roots had the same effect.
