Elven tongues (Quenderin) were the languages spoken by the Quendi, the Elves, from their awakening at Cuiviénen to the later days of the Third Age and beyond. All Elven languages originated from a single root tongue, known as Primitive Quendian (Kwendya or Tintalambë, "Starry Speech"), which evolved over millennia into various dialects and distinct languages. The Elves developed one of the oldest and most sophisticated linguistic traditions in Arda, shaping their speech under the influence of their own culture, environment, and interactions with other beings. The languages of the Elves are divided into two groups, the Eldarin tongues, or languages of the west-wandering elves and the Avarin tongues or languages of the east-elves:
