Elring was a warrior of Lothlórien who was haunted by dreams of a great snow monster and a glowing bird.He begged Lady Galadriel to grant him a vision from her mirror which showed him a snow blocked passage leading to the lair of Caradhras.Despite Galadriel foretelling him that defeating Caradhras and freeing the bird were not his destiny he without permission took the task to travel to the pass on his own, only to return broken and beaten with magical sickness.
