Eliniel (S. "Lady of Stars") was the Lady of the Sîrrandras.
History[]
Eliniel was an elven-lady of Sindarin and Noldorin descent, and came from a great lineage, and is the sister of Gildor Inglorion in some accounts. She married Merethorn, the Nando lord of the Sîrrandras, after he had united his people in the wars against Morgoth.
The couple ruled as lord and lady of their people during the late First Age and throughout the Second Age as vassals of Gil-galad. In the War of the Last Alliance, Merethorn led their people into battle, and was slain by a Sand Drake at Barad-dûr. Eliniel became sole ruler of their people after their husband's death. With Gil-galad also having been slain, an embittered Eliniel did not swear fealty to Círdan as Master of the Grey Havens. In T.A. 10, Eliniel swore fealty to King Valandil in Annúminas, and thus Sîrgala became an Elvish province of Arnor.
Throughout the Third Age, Eliniel saw her people decline, and journey to Mithlond and sail west for Valinor. This grew worse with the fragmentation of Arnor, after which her lands were under the nominal rule of Arthedain. Mannish rulers grew stronger in the region, with a Lord Protector of Sîrgala being appointed, usually the commander of the garrison at Sarn Ford, or the lords of House Tarmeär, the fiefdom between the north of Sîrgala and Lake Evendim. Over centuries, the north of Sîrgala even became known as Tarmaladen, the fief of the Tarmeär.
The decline grew worse after the Second Northern War, where many elves were ambushed by the forces of Angmar. The region eventually grew beyond the control of Arthedain, which culminated in the Shire-grant of T.A. 1601. Eliniel and her vassals originally opposed farmers moving into the region, but she came to accept the Hobbits as a peaceful alternative to the greedy Tarmeär family of the Dúnedain to the north, or the Dunnish Bandit-Lords to the south. She even befriended a few of the Hobbits in the region, such as Molliwara, an unusually intelligent Hobbit woman with a predilection for Elvish lore and magic.
