Dwarvish helmet and crown designs

Helmets from Smaug's hoard
Dwarves were mostly associated with round skull-cap helmet types, however this had not always been true and many of the most populat helmtypes worn by dwarven-warriors throughout the ages often had a rather bulbous helmet bell and were similar to high helm designs such as also had been popular among the Elves. Some helm-types even almost looked like metal-versions of the conical, jelly-bean or pointed cap and hood types worn by most dwarves in everyday life. Many dwarf warriors, especially the Broadbeams of Belegost, also wore masks or masked helmets in battle.
Dwarven helmet designs had a great impact on the helmet types worn by the Sindar of Doriath and later the Northmen of Rhovanion.
Notes[]
We get little description on dwarf-helmets in JRR tolkien's books, the best known and most valid examples are his sketches for Dúrin's crown, which was based on a dwarven war-helmet.Some other conclusions can be drawn from his painting of Smaug and his hoard in which many objects seem to be helmets, most likely made and worn by the Dwarves of Erebor. Many of these helmets have similarities to conical types, norman helmets or spangenhelms while other forms remind of Morions or even Goldhats. Kielbasa helms,cabasset,Ironhat,phrygian-, indo-persian-,montefortino,ottoman types, late roman ridge helm and thracian bronze helms also could be similar to some possible helmet shapes in smaug's hoard.
