Durthang: The Caverns
Gondor built many fortresses at the end of the Second Age inside Mordor to control movement inside the Black Land, and one of the greatest was the castle of Durthand (S."Blackshield") built high upon the rock wall overlooking the Isenmouthe and the pass from Gorgoroth to Udûn. Around the middle of the Third Age it became an Orc-hold and known as Durthang (S."Dark duress"; Or."Durshatîgum").
