A Drelic Priest Initiate

The Drêl (Ap. "Slavers") were a mixed Apysan people that formed the majority ethnic group in Drêl, they recognised a common ancestry with the Pél and were less Númenórean dominated than the Pél or Adena. They seemed to adhere to a more ‘primitive’ lifestyle, apparently mostly based on fishing, supplemented by hunting and limited shifting or ‘garden’ agriculture. This left the heart of their land, as the wild elvish forest of Mighty Green untamed. They adhered to a strict caste system that institutionalised slavery (e.g. slaves coldn't ever be made free).

Society[]

Although they were kin to the matrilineal Adena, the Drêl were patriarchal and patrilineal, with all wives moving in with their husbands. A man dominated his household as patriarch, and a wife was expected to have as many children as possible, though she also had a spiritual role as the shaman of a family's household gods.

They adhered to a relatively rigid caste system, and condemned intercaste unions or even friendship between castes: nobles and warriors were the upper caste, farmers and fishermen made up the middle caste, and the lowest caste was that of slaves, made up of debtors, prisoners of war, and the children of others who had been made slaves.

Because of the caste system, a man of the middle caste could not have a personal guard if he was a wealthy merchant, so rich middle-cast Drêl often hired warriors and mercenaries from other peoples. The official milita of their people was made up of the second-eldest sons of the upper caste, who served there between the ages of sixteen and forty.

Religion[]

Drêl religion revolved arount a pantheon of four dieties: Ardó, the Queen of the Earth, Alávo, the God of the Sky, , the lord of Darkness and Souls, and Koyômo, the lord of winds and water. Household or familial spirits were important and lesser cults existed, but counted few serious adherents.

As in Pél, however, the doctrine expounded by the Servants of the Real Fire attracted many of the young and displaced Drêl in the mid to late Third Age, while the worship of darkness was increasingly common in the poorer districts of the larger towns.

Gamemaster Information:[]

The Drêl language is represented by an ‘altered’ form of Swahili to be very similar, but distinct from, the Pél language.
