Chalcedony Took was a female Hobbit who lived in Buckland.

History[]

Born a Brandybuck in Brandy Hall, S.R. 1403, Chalcedony Took was raised therein and "knows her letters," a fact deducible by the hours she has spent buried in the Hall's library. She is not above a bit of mischief every once in a while - a bit of a holdover from her younger days, during she was always running about, asking questions, and getting into trouble around Buckland. Her scabby knees are the result of endless happy days spent grubbing in gardens, over rocks, and through the wine cellars of her home. Chalcedony's brain is packed full of the wisdom and intelligence of her years in the Shire and beyond - wisdom such as "Toadstools and mushrooms look a lot alike, though toadstools do not make good snacks" and "If you don't disturb a nest of bees, they won't disturb you." Her younger days were less than completely placid; once, in a fit of temper at being lectured for tree-climbing, she announced furiously that she was going to "run away with Harmast Drinkwater an' get married an' climb trees all day!" The threat was seen as an idle one, but that belief was soon disproved as, at the ripe old age of eight years each, Chalcedony and Harmast actually crossed the Brandywine that evening after supper and wandered nearly all the way up to the Great East Road. They were found heading west, Chalcedony's dress in absolute tatters from extensive grubbing and climbing and Harmast's trouser legs in shreds. Of course, the incident was carefully shushed up and the young hobbits suitably disciplined, but still, the memory of the event lies dark upon the minds of Chalcedony's poor parents, Torodac and Aldarida (nee Took) Brandybuck.

As she grew older, she became less inclined to do anything radically adventurous, but never lost the itch in the soles of her furry feet. Consequently, she wiled away her tween years by strolling hither and yon 'crost the Shire, her own version of a quiet adventure. She traveled beyond the borders of her homeland to Bree, a lifelong dream of hers, and saw about as much of the world as any hobbit needs to see, thank you very much. It was during this trip that the handsome young Shirriff Dharlon Took asked for her hand at his birthday-party, and Chalcedony answered him with a tearful "yes." The young couple were wed during Yuletide and soon after moved into the former Pott Plantation, now the Southtook Manor, in the Southfarthing. The old mansion was refurbished and redecorated and made very much livable just in time for the first of Dharlon and Chalcedony's children, the twins Reynard and Amarinda. After a few years, little Ruby arrived, was followed by her brother Torodac, and their siblings Saffron, Dharadoc, and Tirimbard. The Manor is once more full of light and life, and Chalcedony has settled into this comfortable life quite happily.

A lover of music, Chalcedony's arrival upon the scene is always announced by her voice rising in horribly out-of-tune song or even more horrendous whistling. Oddly enough, however, she can play the recorder rather well. Aside from a voice that prevents her from most types of musical pursuits, her weaknesses include an over-fondness for caramels, a horrid tendency to bury her nose in a book and refuse to come out, and a nasty, recurring cough, especially in spring. More versatile than some, she is rather accepting of change - except in the rare case when she feels the change is wrong. Chalcedony fears little, excluding, perhaps, confinement and evil things happening to those she loves. Often, she is heard piping away on a small beautifully-carved cherrywood flute, a gift from her closest friend, Tigerlily Banks. Though the notes may not always be as tuneful as she'd like, they are straight from her heart and played with a smile.
