The Carnen (S."Redwater"; Har."Burús") was the only major tributary of the Harnen that lay downstream of the latter's confluence with the Ode Pezar. Its waters originated in valleys of the Ephel Dúath, flowing southwest through Harondor until they mingled with the Malduin near Pin Hingren. The river then turned south until it joined the Harnen a few miles to the east of the Iant Harnen. Notable for it's deep, wide valley, small boats could reliably navigate all year as far as Imlad Carnen and, in late winter to early summer, to the Malduin.

Along much of its 250 mile path, the Carnen had cut deeply into the surrounding land, carving a river valley from one to four miles across. Though not normally burdened with a heavy sediment load, most of what it did carry was eroded from red sandstone. Occasional heavy rains in the Ephel Dúath also washed great quantities iron-laden dirt into the river. When this happened, the river ran red for its entire length, even coloring the waters of the Harnen after the two rivers joined.
