Burin was a Dwarf who lived in the Lonely Mountain and was one of Balin's sons. Rather than living in Erebor, Burin had mainly settled in the Iron Hills with his folk. However, he visited the city and worked as a miner. There, he swiftly spun a story about how he had once worked in a dangerous area of the Deeps below Erebor where a stray sound could cause a deadly cave-in. He was married to a lovely Dwarf-woman and had about six daughters and five sons, in which he would have dozens of his own grand kids.

In the earlier drafts for The Lord of the Rings Burin son of Balin was the younger dwarf who had accompanied Gloin to the Council of Elrond.He was an earlier version of the character who would eventually evolve into Gimli son of Glóin.
