Panfish (W."Kuskalas") was a term coined by adanic hunters and outdoorsmen, describing edible game fish that usually did not outgrow the size of a frying pan.Pickerel, Salmon and Carp were usually not considered Kuskalas but most Perch were and some southern Hunters even considered some types of Blowfish "Panfish".

Types of fish sometimes called "Panfish[]

  • Amberjack : large fish of the Belegaer, lesser Amberjacks were sometimes considered panfish while the Greater Amberjack outgrew any size of panfish by far.
  • Big-eyed Fish (L): these were strange creatures of the watery Underdeeps, usually only fished by Goblins and other Underdwellers.
  • Blood-fish:An elusive and hard to catch freshwater fish found only in the Entwash and it's tributaries.
  • Celebhal: A very rare silver-coloured freshwater fish found only in the Ered Luin and the tributaries of the Lune.
  • Drum : also called Croakers this was a family of fish usually at home only in the New Lands though there had been reports of the Númenórians having introduced them as invasive species in some ponds of former númenorean settlements.
  • Luillim:A rare freshwater fish found only in the Lune and it's tributaries.
  • Morning Fish: Eriadorian term for a type of common herring especially enjoyed for a breakfast.
  • Redfish : A term applied to several species of fish though usually deep-sea rock-fish.
    • Golden Redfish: Also called ocean perch, this was a deep-sea species of rockfish from the Northern Belegaer.
    • Silver Haddock: a saltwater fish from the northern Belegaer.
  • Perch (L): a family of long and rounded freshwater fish common throughout all of the Westlands.
    • Bass (L): A name applied to many families of fish, usually perch-like ones, most common was the Westlands Bass.
      • Big mouthed Bass: a carnivorous freshwater gamefish only known in some rivers of Andrast and Anfalas, believed to be an invasive species introduced by the Númenóreans.
      • puppy-drums (L):Another gamefish usually connected with Aman and the New Lands and not naturally home to Middle-earth though there had been reports of this fish in Númenor and in some númenórean colonies, possibly as an invasive species.
    • large-eyed rabbitfish (L): a colorful and exotic looking family of fish found mostly in the Bay of Belfalas, but sometimes as far north as the Bay of Forochel.Usually considered distasteful.
  • Blowfish:sometimes lso called ballon-, puffer- or Globefish these were found found in shallow temperate and tropical seas all around Middle-Earth and Ambar's other continents.
    • Moonfish: A family of perch-like bonyfish found predominantly throughout western Gondor.
      • ocean sunfish: A family of fish native to all temperate and tropical waters of every ocean in Ambar, though only some of the very smallest subspecies of Dwarf Sunfish were considered "Panfish".
    • Boarfish: Two families of perch-like fish, both home to the Bay of Ormal, central romenear and southwestern Belegaer.
  • Brass fish:An order of perch-like bonyfish containing two families of which one is partially home to the Belegaer and western Romenear but all to the Haragaer.
    • Dragonet:Small marine fish of the Brass fish family found mainly in the tropical waters of the western Bay of Ormal.
  • Mackerels: A family of mostly fast swimming predatory fish home to the Belegaer, bay of Ormal and Haragaer.Only it's smallest species were considered panfish.
    • Maegril:A small brilliant riverfish swimming around in great families.
    • River Perch - also called redfin perch and big-scaled redfin a greenish freshwater fish of the perch family common throughout the Westlands.
  • Swordfish: A family of fish native widely in tropical and temperate parts of the Belegaer, Bay of Ormal and Romenear. Only it's tiniest , not fully-grown exemplars were considered "Panfish"
    • Huge Swordfish: Some rare exemplars of Swordfish had been reported to have been larger than the largest commonly known Swordfishes, (over fourteen feet in length).These of couse were not "Panfish".
    • Sweetwater swordfish:There had been reports of tiny swordfish to be found in the Underdeeps, these were sweetwater fish and their exact relation to real Swordfish was not known, though just like their supposed larger kin they were highly predatory.
  • Grounders:Several families of fish living and feeding at the bottoms of seas and lakes.
  • White-eyed fish:A riverfish common to Rhûn and southern Rhovanion.
  • Wrasses (L): A wide family of bright coloured marine fish home to the Belegaer, Bay of Ormal and Romenear.
