Bloodflies (S. Píeg) had a pair of scaled wings, a pair of halteres, a slender body, and long legs. The females of most bloodfly species sucked blood from other animals, which had made them the most deadly disease vector known, killing people by the spread of infectious pathogens.
But the term could also refer to any kind if flying and stinging insect, "biting insects" in general were also called "Itispír" (Q."itching small insects") including most hornets, horseflies, midges, ticks, wasps, but not bees.
