The younger brother of Marcho (and always known by that relation), Blanco[1] was a fairly savvy leader and diplomat in his own right, but he mainly served as counsellor and provided moral support for his brother, who truly had greater gifts. Blanco demonstrated great devotion to his brother, and to the cause of Hobbits in general. During the chaos that ensued after the founding of the Shire, Blanco was remembered for his singularly impassioned plea to the warring clans from the Hobbiton town square, when Marcho was too distraught to respond. This speech, little noted in history, was actually a decisive factor in the eventual calming of the Hobbitish territorial disputes.

Names[]

  • Cavallo

Notes[]

  1. Blanco and his brother Marcho each have a name that refers to 'horse'. Tolkien chose the names to mirror those of Hengest and Horsa, legendary figures who led the Anglo-Saxons into Britain in the fifth century, and whose names also each refer to 'horse'. Cf.: mearas, Marhari, Marhwini.
