Bill was a Bree-land-pony which had been sold to Frodo Baggins (for 12 silver pennies, more than three times normal price) by Bill Ferny, after whom Sam named the new beast. At first Bill was a poor and underfed animal, mistreated by its former owner, but under the hands of Sam and the Elves of Imladris, Bill recovered and showed itself as a loyal and hardy asset. Sam had to set Bill free when the The Fellowship of the Ring entered the Mines of Moria, but it eventually escaped the Watcher in the Water and found its way back to Rivendell.
