Bellakarin (Bel.) or Korleanic (Bel."coral-coast-tongue") is one of the lesser-known tongues of Middle-earth, spoken only in the coastal realm of Bellakar, a land lying south of Umbar on the shores of the Great Sea (Bel. Bellakar). Rooted in the interactions between Númenórean colonists and the indigenous peoples of the region, Bellakarin evolved into a hybrid tongue, shaped by the influence of Adûnaic, Sindarin, and local languages.

Lore[]

The history of Bellakarin is deeply entwined with that of its land, Bellakar (Bêlekhar), a kingdom founded by Númenórean settlers during the Second Age. During the early phases of Númenórean exploration, the dominant languages in Bellakar were Haradic dialects closely related to those of Mûmakan, Târik an-Nuhron, and Khand. However, by the mid-Second Age, the Númenóreans of Zimrathâni established settlements along the coasts. Originally, the noble ruling class—the Azûlairi—spoke Sindarin, the language of the Eldar, much like their northern cousins in Pelargir and Lond Daer. However, as Númenor grew more estranged from the Elves and Adûnaic became the dominant language among the King’s Men, the settlers in Bellakar adopted Late Adûnaic as their primary tongue. The blend of Númenórean and Sindar speeches with local Haradric tongues gradually evolved into Bellakarin, a creole language that retained a heavy Adûnaic base but incorporated Haradric phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary.
