Isildur Elendilion claimed the One Ring for his own. Two years later, whilst returning to Eriador via the Anduin Vales, he was ambushed near the Gladden Fields by a horde of Orcs from the Misty Mountains. The result was that Isildur and his three eldest sons were slain and the Ring was lost in the Anduin River. This event is what allowed for Sauron to return and gain power again in the world. Ohtar of Arnor, an esquire of Isildur, was dispatched by Isildur to take the shards of Narsil to Imladris for safe keeping – which he succeeded in doing.

The One Ring was to lay lost for more than two-and-a-half millennia.
