As per the ancient prophecy, Gondolin was the last of the elven cities/realms of Beleriand to fall to Morgoth's forces. The Battle of Gondolin (also "Fall of Gondolin") was a terrible battle of the First Age in which King Turgon, the last son of Fingolfin, was slain. From the Fall of Gondolin rose the Host of Valinor, as Tuor led the survivors out of Gondolin and to the Mouths of Sirion. There Eärendil the Mariner would grow up, and eventually earn the Valar's protection for against Morgoth.

At this battle, Gothmog and Raumo (the Balrog that Glorfindel faced) were killed by Ecthelion and Glorfindel respectively, who but died in the process. Egalmoth, Galdor, Voronwë Aranwion, Celebrimbor, Tuor, Idril, and presumably Aranwë, managed to escape the Fall of Gondolin.

Tuor personally slew the four orc-generals Balcmeg, Othrod, Lug, and Orcobal--and he managed to kill Maeglin too. Tuor also wounded the Beast of Gondolin in this battle as well, and he fought through many evil fiery spirits too.

Rôg also slew many fire-spirits, but eventually met his end to the remaining Balrog chieftains (probably slain by Lungorthin). Duilin met his end (presumably) from a fiery bolt by Felagrog, who would later be known as Durin's Bane.

Among the evil survivors to fight in the War of Wrath were: Lungorthin, Uru, Durlach, Felagrog, Maroch, Salgant, and possibly the Beast of Gondolin (who went into a berserk rage after being wounded by Tuor).
