In the year T.A. 2758, Rohan's armies drew into the east to repel an attack there. During this time, Wulf son of Freca saw an advantage to lead the Dunlendings against Rohan.
Helm Hammerhand fought the Dunlendings at the Crossings of Isen, but was overwhelmed by Dunlendings and Southrons that came up the Isen. Also, Edoras was eventually seized by Wulf, and no aid would come to Rohan from Gondor since they were still busy fighting in the Corsair Wars. Helm's son Haleth was killed in battle when Wulf took Edoras.
It is conceivable that at this time the great king Bladorthin led his forces against the Easterling incursion as well, for this is why he was considered great and sought trade with the Dwarves at the time of The Hobbit: to resupply his armies with weapons.
