In Adûnaic, Bar or Barûn was the title for a geat Lord, usually a local liege-lord or the governor of a colony, in contrast to an Er, a Prince of the royal family who was in the line of heirs to the throne. It had its origin among the Hadorians where the "Bar" was the head of a house, or earlier a powerful cattle-chief. After the fall of Númenor, the titles Er- or Bar- became heritable forms of address among the local Black Númenórean successor-lords. Among the Elendili, Bar was translated into Sindarin as Hír or Híratar.
