Aran in Quenya and Sindarin was a word or title designating a king or lord of a specified region. Among the Dúnedain of Rhudaur "Aran" was also sometimes used to denote a kind of Petty King, lower in rank to the King of the Realm and sworn to him by an oath of fealty, but still undisputed in authority within his local bounds.
