The Long Lake (S."Annen") was the largest body of water in Rhovanion between the Misty Mountain and the Sea of Rhûn. The lake was formed by the confluence of the Forest River and the River Running, and it terminated at a steep waterfall (Mere's End) at it's southern end. The town of Esgaroth rested on great wooden platforms on the surface of the lake itself, for it's defense and to facilitate handling the freight which was carried across Annen. The Annen was very deep and was never fully frozen, even in the coldest winters.
