Angband is a roguelike computer rpg originally released in 1990.It was based on 1983's "Moria" and originally had the player create a character and get through all 100 levels of Angband to defeat Morgoth himself.Until today many variants and mods of Angand get released, many of which have been so far removed from the original they can be considered entirely new games in their own right, while others are still quite close to it.Popular "Angband variants" include "Gumband", "Mangband", "Zangband", "Vanilla Angband" and all in all 140+ more.

The original Angband included the playable races Human Half-Elf, Elf, Halfling, Gnome, Dwarf, Half-Orc, Half-Troll, Dunadan, High-Elf, Kobold and some variants include even more exotic races, as the "Yeek".

Original Classes included Warrior, Mage, Priest, Paladin, Rogue, Ranger, some later variants added more exotic classes such as Druid, Necromancer and Blackguard.

The bestiary included creatures from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien such as The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit or The Silmarillion and Middle-earth Role Playing as well as generic fantasy monsters from D&D and elements taken from other Sword&Sorcery worlds and videogames as well as norse, antique and asian mythology.

Notes[]

The very nature of early Angband included many inconsistencies and anachronisms with the Legendarium. For example the "Kobold" and "Gnome" races rather sesemble the d&d races of that name than Tolkienish Noldor, Brownies or Goblins. Some newer variants have tried to correct these and return to a more canonical approach while others embraced these differences for a more lighthearted and humoristic take on the game principle.
