Ancalagon the Black, the defender (and ironically destroyer) of Thangorodrim, the mighty "Rushing-jaws", was the greatest dragon to ever exist, the mightiest of Monsters of Morgoth and the most fearsome beast to walk or fly in Middle-earth, epitome of Fire-drakes and the father of Winged Worms.

He was Morgoth’s ultimate creation, a living engine of conquest, devastation, and terror. Possessing wings vast enough to shroud the sky in darkness and fire potent enough to incinerate entire cities in a single breath, Ancalagon was a creature of unparalleled might. His mere presence could turn armies to flight, and his talons could crush fortresses to dust. Even his spells equaled those of the Maiar and his visage invoked a terror rivalling that of a Balrog. Of all sevrants of Morgoth, only Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, could rival his power, though even he dared not challenge the Black Dragon openly.

Ancalagon was meant to be the harbinger of Middle-earth’s conquest, yet his reign of destruction, though brief, was short-lived, marking the final and most desperate hour of the War of Wrath before he was slain by Eärendil the Mariner in a battle that lasted from dusk until dawn.
