(The Lord of the Rings: War in the North)

Ûrgost exact date of birth is not known, but it is likely to be placed somewhere after Smaug who was considered the last surviving Greater Dragon. Around the second half of the Third Age the dragons made their return to Middle-earth, attacking the strongholds of the Dwarves in the Grey Mountains spreading terror and destruction and among these were the dragons Scatha, Smaug and Ûrgost. The latter occupied an ancient abandoned dwarven stronghold and remained there for over a thousand years, without having any part in the events that upset the history of Middle-earth. During the War of the Ring Ûrgost was approached by Agandâur, Sauron's lieutenant in the North, who offered him an alliance in exchange for the city of Nordinbad, however the dragon prevaricated not wanting to go to war alongside Sauron and not considering Nordinbad (which he knew was not particularly rich in gold or other treasures) a worthy abode. He was later joined by Eradan, Farin and Andriel whom he asked in exchange for his neutrality the death of Agandaûr and the fortress of Carn Dûm which he coveted for himself from the beginning but which he could not claim as used by Agandaûr and Ûrgost did not want to openly challenge Sauron by killing one of his lieutenants. Following the sorcerer's defeat, Ûrgost took possession of the fortress, promising the three heroes to refrain from molesting the peoples of Middle-earth.
